Student Life - Scholarships and Funding

The University of Porto promotes and/or sponsors a wide range of financial support to its students and researchers, in order to ensure equal opportunities in the access to its courses, but also to reward the merit of those who stand out for their academic results.

Among the support available to students and researchers at the U.Porto, are:

SASUP Scholarships

If you are enrolled in Licenciaturas, Mestrados or Mestrados at U.Porto, you may apply for scholarships granted by the University's Social Services (SASUP). These scholarships consist of a monthly cash payment to help cover the costs of attending the course.

Students who are Portuguese or nationals of European Union Member-States, stateless or from countries with which there are cooperation protocols providing for the reciprocal application of this benefit may apply for these scholarships (students with International Student Statute are excluded). This scholarship is awarded and renewed annually, and the deadlines and results of the competitions are published on the SASUP website.

Merit Scholarships

Every year, merit scholarships are distributed to students with the best academic results at the University of Porto. It is a pecuniary award for students enrolled in Undergraduate, Master's and Integrated Master's Degrees, who achieve exceptional academic results, regardless of their socio-economic situation.

Consult the General Regulation on the Award of Merit Scholarships to U. Porto Students.

Every year, the U. Porto also awards a set of Incentive Prizes to the best first year students of each of its 14 schools/faculties. The award ceremony - equivalent in value to the annual tuition fee - takes place during the commemorative session of the University Day.

Scientific Scholarships

Through its faculties and research units, the University of Porto sponsors the awarding of scientific initiation scholarships and research scholarships to Graduates, Masters or PhDs. These grants are for scientific training in research projects or scientific and technological institutions in Portugal.

The duration of the scholarship is, in general, annual and extendable for up to three years, and cannot be awarded for periods of less than three consecutive months.

Other Support

Besides the scholarships, the SASUP also has a Social Support Fund aimed at students who, for not meeting the eligibility criteria, were not awarded scholarships by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and are in a situation of occasional economic need.

In addition, students can have their training programme financed by study and research grants awarded by external institutions, government bodies or partner institutions of the University, through the signing of agreements or national and international consortia. Among the beneficiaries of this support are, for example, students from Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP).

The Camões Institute, the Portal of the Portuguese Communities, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Santander Universities programme, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Millennium BCP Foundation or even the UT Austin Portugal, CMU Portugal and MIT Portugal programmes are some of the programmes and institutions that provide this type of support.
