Merit Scholarships
Merit scholarships are awarded every year to the U.Porto students with the best academic results. These scholarships are a cash prize for students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Integrated Master’s programmes who display exceptional academic achievement, regardless of their socio-economic situation.
See the General Regulation on the Awarding of Merit Scholarships to U.Porto Students.
In addition, U.Porto awards Incentive Prizes to the best first-year students of each one of its 14 schools/faculties. The prizes – equivalent to the amount of the annual tuition fees – are awarded during the commemoration ceremony on University Day.
Scientific Scholarships
U.Porto awards undergraduate research scholarships and research scholarships for Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral students. These scholarships are aimed at scientific training in research projects or institutions of science and technology, in Portugal.
As a rule, the scholarship duration is annual and extendable up to three years and cannot be awarded for periods of less than three consecutive months.
Other Support
Aside from study scholarships, SASUP also has a Social Support Fund, aimed at students who, having not met the eligibility criteria, were not considered for the SASUP scholarships and who temporarily find themselves in a difficult economic situation.
Students can also have their studies financed by study and research scholarships offered by external institutions, government entities, or partner institutions of the University, through the establishment of national and international agreements or consortia. Beneficiaries of this type of support include, for example, students from Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP).
Institutions that offer this type of support include the Camões Institute, the Portuguese Communities Portal, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Santander Universities programme, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Millennium BCP Foundation, or the UT Austin Portugal programme, the CMU Portugal programme and the MIT Portugal programme.
