This is why each year we recognise the merit of those who distinguish themselves through their academic and scientific work, inside and outside the community.
This is the highest honorary title awarded by the University to figures who stand out for their contribution to the arts, sciences, philosophy, humanities or to better understanding among peoples. U.Porto's Honoris Causa Doctorate shortlist includes more than 100 academics and scientists, but also sportspeople, cultural and political personalities, Nobel prize-winners, and others.

The Merit Medal of the University of Porto is awarded to a person or a group of people, national or international, who have stood out for the important services that they have provided to the University. The medal is awarded by the Rector in a formal sitting.
Since 2005, the University of Porto has recognised its retired or emeritus professors annually in acknowledgment of their valuable and continued contribution to the University. The proclamation of U.Porto’s Emeritus Professors takes place during the Formal Sitting which commemorates University Day (22 March).
The Excellence Award in Scientific Research of the University of Porto has been awarded since 2018 to U.Porto lecturers and researchers who stand out for the excellence and impact of their respective scientific research projects. The presentation of the award usually occurs during the Formal Sitting commemorating University Day (22 March).

The Educational Excellence Award of the University of Porto annually recognises lecturers, researchers or groups of lecturers at the University who stand out for their use of educational models rooted in excellence which address the educational challenges of today. The presentation of the award usually occurs during the Formal Sitting commemorating University Day (22 March).

Awarded for the first time in 2010, the Incentive Award annually recognises students who have displayed exceptional educational achievement during the 1st year of their Bachelor's Degree or Integrated Master's Degree course at U.Porto. The presentation of the award usually takes place during the Formal Sitting commemorating University Day (22 March). It is a monetary prize and consists of the amount of the annual tuition fee applicable to national students.
The Active Citizenship Award, created in 2012, is presented every year to students who have distinguished themselves in their extracurricular civic role in such diverse fields as social solidarity, entrepreneurship, educational politics and sport and/or the environment. The presentation of the award usually occurs during the Formal Sitting commemorating University Day (22 March).

Every year, the U.Porto Sports Centre (CDUP-UP) recognises students and other members of the community who stand out for their sporting achievements. These awards will be presented during the Sports Gala of the University of Porto.
