Start of University Education in Food and Nutrition in Portugal (Higher Course in Nutritionism).

The roots of this organic unit date back to 1976, when university teaching in food and human nutrition began at the University of Porto, with personalities such as Dr Emílio Peres and Professor Norberto Teixeira dos Santos.

Creation of the Degree in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Porto.

Some years after the beginning of the course, after analysing the experience and considering the country's needs, and based on a proposal of the management bodies of the Nutritionism course, the Government decided to restructure the bachelor's degree and to create a degree in Nutrition Sciences at the University of Porto (Governmental Decree no. 62/83 of 12/07/83, D.R. I Serial, no. 158). The new study plan conferring the degree of Licenciado in Nutritional Sciences started in 1987 (Governmental Decree no. 154/87 of 05/03/87, D.R. I Serial no. 53).

The objectives, specificity of training, nature, attributions and competencies of graduates in Nutritional Sciences led to the proposal of creating an Organic Unit at the University of Porto. The constitution of this Unit was approved by the University Senate on 12/11/92 and ratified by order of His Excellency the Minister of Education on 17/07/96 (Despacho n.º 165-XIII/ME/96).

Among the youngest organic units of the University of Porto, FCNAUP was created in July 1996 under the designation of Institute of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto.

Approval of the current designation: Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto (FCNAUP).

In compliance with the recently approved statutes, for the first time, its Pedagogical and Directive Councils were elected, as well as the Representatives Assembly. In July of the same year, the current name was approved: Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto. It is, in Portuguese university education, the Faculty with the longest history, with more than four decades of experience in training and research in Nutrition Sciences.

In 2020, the FCNAUP was installed in its building, dedicated to the challenges it sets itself.
