Contexts and Conditions for Successful CLIL in Portugal

Margarida Coelho holds a PhD in Languages and Cultures from the University of Extremadura and an MA in English Literature and Culture from the University of Lisbon. She is a senior lecturer at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (IPP) School of Technology and Management (ESTG) where she teaches English Language/ Technical English. As Coordinator of the Languages and Culture Centre (CLiC) of the Institute from 2010 to 2015, she was deeply involved in the promotion of language learning among the students of the Institute and in the community. Researcher of CETAPS/TEALS (Working CLIL research strand) and collaborator in the CLIL research team of ReCLes.pt (Associação de Redes dos Centros de Línguas do Ensino Superior em Portugal), she has developed her research and published in the areas of teacher training and language methodologies, particularly CLIL.

Margarida Morgado has a PhD in English Literature (Cultural Studies) from the University of Lisbon and is Coordinating Professor of English Cultural Studies at the Escola Superior de Educação, Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, where she teaches Business English, Intercultural Mediation, Translation and Plurilingual Education on a wide range of Bachelor courses. She is the Head of the Language Centre (CILCE) and coordinates English teaching across all faculties of the Polytechnic. She has been involved in several EU-funded applied research projects in the areas of CLIL, ICLHE, intercultural education and teacher education through Virtual Exchanges and she has published on these areas. She is a researcher at CETAPS and member of the Working CLIL Research Strand.

Maria Ellison is Assistant Professor of didactics of languages at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Porto (FLUP) where she teaches about CLIL on Master’s degrees in teaching languages and doctoral programmes, as well as in service teacher development courses. She is director of the Master’s in Teaching English in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education at FLUP. Her PhD thesis focused on CLIL as a Catalyst for developing Reflective Practices in Foreign Language Teacher Education. She has coordinated CLIL projects across educational levels in Portugal. She is convener of the Working CLIL Research Stran d of CETAPS.
