Generative Artificial Intelligence Systems

Get to know some of the tools based on generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) with potential use in the U.Porto academic community. They use advanced technologies to help create new content and also to carry out routine tasks. They are based on patterns and structures that are learned using large amounts of data.

Of these tools, with free versions or paid subscriptions with more potential, we'd like to highlight some of the most popular, such as Microsoft's Copilot, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude.

Microsof Copilot

It's a Microsoft tool based on generative artificial intelligence, which helps with content creation and other common tasks.

Copilot can be accessed via a browser or a dedicated app (Windows, Android, iOS). Users who log in to this tool with their U.Porto credentials also benefit from corporate data protection.

For users who need more advanced features, such as complete integration with the Office365 suite (namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams), a specific license, Copilot for Microsoft 365, will be required. This optional license will only be available to the employee if subscribed to by the institution and at an additional cost, as it is an add-on license to the base license (‘Knowledge Worker’), acquired by the institution as part of the annual renewal of the Microsoft Enrollment Education Solutions (EES) contract subscribed to at U.Porto. Further information on this license can be found.

The cost of the Copilot for Microsoft 365 license for 12 months is 360 € + VAT (30 € + VAT/month). If the license is subscribed to during the contract, the cost will be proportional to the number of months remaining until the contract is renewed, which takes place annually on 30 April.

Since this is a licence subscribed to by the institution, the purchase process must always be formalized through the institution that subscribes to the license at U.Porto, as is the case with other Microsoft licenses.

Individual purchases of ‘Microsoft Copilot (for home)’ can be made via a personal Microsoft account.

You can get a free trial on your licenseaccount (option not available for institutional accounts) by consulting the following topic: ‘Get the free trial’

It should also be noted that Microsoft Copilot is a family of differentiated assistants and not just Microsoft 365 Copilot, each with specific functionalities for a particular area.

For more detailed information, you can consult, for example, the guide from Microsoft partner ProServeIT.

Users can use Copilot, with data protection, by authenticating with their U.Porto institutional credentials (up<mechanographic_number>@up.pt) using:

  1. For any browser, see the following address: https://copilot.microsoft.com/;
  2. The side tab is available in the EDGE browser (Windows 10/11);
  3. The application is available for the Windows 11 operating system, which can be obtained from the ‘Microsoft Store’ if it is not installed;
  4. The application is available for mobile devices in the Play Store (Android) and App Store (iOS).

The version available for use by the U.Porto academic community is similar to the one available for personal Microsoft accounts but with additional features, such as the possibility of attaching files and corporate data protection.

By using this version of Copilot with U.Porto's institutional credentials, the user also benefits from commercial data protection.

When it comes to using Microsoft Copilot in the business version (i.e. where users use their institutional credentials from the University of Porto), they are not stored by Microsoft or used to train the artificial intelligence models. This is one of the major differences from the general consumer version.

Both Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Copilot 365 respect existing privacy, security, and compliance commitments for Microsoft 365 business customers, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the EU Data Boundary.

These commitments are set out in the product terms, available for consultation at any time at Microsoft Product Terms.
