What is an Antivirus

What is an Antivirus

An antivirus is a software solution designed to protect devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones from digital threats, including virus, trojans, worms, ransomware and other types of malware.

This programme continuously monitors the device's behaviour, identifying and neutralising threats that could compromise data security or system performance. In addition, many antivirus programmes include advanced features such as a firewall, phishing protection and application control, ensuring comprehensive protection in the daily use of devices.

Advantages of Using an Antivirus

Advantages of Using an Antivirus

Installing an antivirus on your device offers several advantages, the main one being effective protection against malware that can compromise personal information such as passwords or bank details. The antivirus also blocks malicious websites and emails aimed at stealing data, such as phishing attacks. In addition, it prevents unauthorised access to your device and reduces the risk of losing important files to ransomware attacks.

By ensuring system protection and stability, antivirus contributes to safer browsing and a more efficient user experience.

Microsoft Defender at UPorto

Microsoft Defender at U.Porto

The University of Porto has implemented Microsoft Defender as a protection solution against cyber threats, both for institutional equipment and for the personal devices of the members of its academic community. This decision was made based on the effectiveness of the tool, which integrates an advanced security platform with threat detection and response functionalities (Endpoint Detection Response - EDR).

Microsoft Defender is fully integrated with other Microsoft solutions already in use at the University, enabling more effective monitoring of the network and connected devices, thus helping to strengthen the University's cybersecurity management capacity.
