Specialization in Orthodontics

Orthodontics is one of the specialty areas of dentistry officially recognized and regulated at EU level (Directive 78/686 / EEC of 25 July 1978). In Portugal, to obtain the specialist's title in orthodontics (in the Portuguese Board of Dentists) it is necessary to preceed the minimal theoretical and practical training in an orthodontic university department or higher education unit, having at least three years duration and prior recognition of suitability by the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD). It is internationally recognized the need for specialized training in this course of dentistry, in that both the scientific evidence and clinical experience show that the acquisition of clinical skills in the area of orthodontics requires additional theoretical and practical education, made after the completion of undergraduate studies that meet specific requirements and criteria.
