CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUES | ESC journal welcomes proposals for the 2025 guest-edited special issues

2023-03-06

ESC – Educação, Sociedade & Culturas [Education, Society & Cultures] is an open access, peer-reviewed, journal published three times a year by the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) of the University of Porto, Portugal.

ESC journal welcomes proposals for the 2025 guest-edited special issues on a focused theme that falls within the aims and scope of the journal. ESC publishes two special issues per year and a third-one, regular issue.
The deadline for proposal submissions is 31 May 2023.
The Editor-in-Chief, Sofia Marques da Silva, will announce the decision on proposals accepted for and planned publication by 15 June 2023.

Permanently in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, Guest Editors of an ESC special issue handle manuscripts as they come in, invite reviewers and request them revisions and recommend manuscript’s acceptance or rejection. An ESC special issue will contain approximately 6-9 scholarly articles.
All special issue’s submitted manuscripts, with a maximum length of 8,000 words, are subject to the same rigorous double-blind peer review process as regular submissions. Each SI might include theoretical and review articles, but ESC gives priority to quantitative, qualitative empirical or mixed-methods studies.

Proposals must contain the following:

  • Title of the proposed special issue, clearly reflecting the theme and content.
  • Name, position, affiliation and email of the proposed Guest Editor(s) together with brief biographical notes.
  • A brief description (500-600 words in length) of the rationale of the proposal, reflecting the aims and scope of the special issue, its innovative nature in relation to existing published work in the field, and its contribution to international education debates.
  • A draft list of intended contributions, that includes tentative titles, authors details, and proposed abstracts, and stating clearly whether named contributors are already confirmed. In each abstract the theoretical dimension, and the methodology and empirical data to be used should be clear.
  • An estimated timetable.

The diversity of potential authors will be a consideration in the selection process: it is valued that the potential SI authors represent diverse perspectives and have diverse institutional affiliations from different countries.
Proposals should be sent directly to the Editor-in-Chief, Sofia Marques da Silva ([email protected]).
We very much look forward to receiving proposals.
