ICBAS Presentation

The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto is a school that develops activities for the creation, transmission and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the area of life sciences and health. With a holistic, collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach to health, the central inspiration for its intervention in science and the community is the concept of One Health, expressed in the motto "One School, One Health".

ICBAS is today a benchmark institution, offering highly recognized teaching in preparation for professional practice in medicine, aquatic sciences, biochemistry (in partnership with the Faculty of Sciences), veterinary medicine, bioengineering (in partnership with the Faculty of Engineering) and bioinformatics (in partnership with the Faculties of Sciences and Pharmacy).

Hospital Santo António

UPVET

ICBAS maintains a historic and privileged relationship with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António, the hospital where the clinical component of human medicine is developed.

In the case of veterinary medicine, several entities are important support structures for the course, such as the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Porto (UPVet), the Equine Clinical Center and the Animal Reproduction Center, both at the Vairão campus of the of the University of Porto.

ICBAS also privileges a vast collaboration with various research centers in the U.Porto R&D ecosystem, from which students from the different areas benefit.

ICBAS's undergraduate offer is complemented by a wide range of master's and doctoral specializations. This is a unique and distinctive school model, which is the continuation of the ideas and values of its founders who, in the post-revolutionary period, created a multidisciplinary school with a strong connection to the outside, in this respect a pioneer in Portugal at the time.

The philosophy of ICBAS expresses the thought and work of Abel Salazar, perpetuated in the expression "A doctor who only knows Medicine doesn't even know Medicine", which he liked to use.
