Maintaining a school of integrity and safety is the basis of ICBAS's daily activities. To this end, the school has a permanent focus on well-being and the observance of ethical and bioethical principles in the exercise of life and health sciences. ICBAS is committed to complying with U.Porto's ethical code of academic conduct and other guiding documents, including the European code of conduct for research integrity (ALLEA - All European Academies). The ULSSA/ICBAS Ethics Committee and the Body Responsible for Animal Welfare (ORBEA) ensure that these principles are upheld, in the light of the values of human dignity and animal welfare.

The Joint Ethics Committee of the Local Health Unit of Santo António (ULSSA) and ICBAS, regulated by the provisions of Decree-Law no. 80/2018 of October 15, is a multidisciplinary body of an advisory nature, which is responsible for ensuring compliance with ethical and bioethical principles in the exercise of medical and biomedical sciences in clinical research, in the light of the principle of human dignity.
The protection of animals used for scientific purposes is covered by Decree Law 113/2013, which transposes Directive 2010/63/EU. ORBEA is the body responsible for ensuring and guaranteeing the application of current legislation in the field of animal welfare.
