The continuing education unit Biolaboratory - Multidisciplinary Experimentation Project is an “InovPed” curricular unit which seeks to explore the intersection of science/art/society. It is a joint organization of two organic units at U.Porto, the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) and the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), involving researchers from different areas (biology, science communication and fine arts).

The essence of this training unit is to promote multidisciplinary learning environments that contribute to merging the acquisition of new knowledge, the development of laboratory skills, and experimentation (not only scientific but also artistic and social) as a response to solving specific problems. With this in mind, the following objectives can be listed: - Recognize the relevance of multidisciplinary approaches in the production of scientific knowledge and in science-society dialogue; - Develop dialogue and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams; - Develop the ability to design, plan and implement interdisciplinary project work, promoting collaborative work that enhances the complementarity of knowledge and skills; - Develop (and/or deepen) laboratory work skills in the context of life sciences and the issues under study; - Recognize the contribution of artistic practices in reflecting on problems associated with life sciences; - Stimulate skills that promote the group project in front of different audiences, namely their peers, but also other social agents.

U.Porto or non-U.Porto students; other interested parties, linked to or outside U.Porto. The training unit is aimed at anyone interested in life sciences issues and multidisciplinary approaches, including science communication, science-society dialog or the intersection of science and art. The training unit will welcome 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle U.Porto students, regardless of their area of study.

The aim is for students to develop an exploratory project activity in groups, on a topic that should be proposed by the group. The teaching methodology favors autonomous work, while guiding this work in the preparation and implementation of the proposal, through the presentation and discussion of examples in theoretical-practical classes as well as monitoring in tutorial sessions. The work carried out in laboratories will help to substantiate the project work.

Assessment will be based on the completion of a project which must be presented and defended in a separate session (70% of the final grade), the completion of a short individual written assignment reflecting on the contribution made to the development of the project (15% of the final grade), as well as participation in class, including short discussion sessions on the progress of the project work (15% of the final grade).
