Post-Traumatic Personal Injury Assessment (2024/2025)
Person in charge
Post-traumatic bodily injury assessment, aiming to orient its proper reparation, whether judicially or extrajudiciallly, is an area that, in Portugal, is essentially assumed by legal medicine, extending often, however, to other medical specialties. So it has gained autonomy, lately, in some aspects: in fact, not only it’s demanded here the contribution of other medical specialties, but also because it’s assumed that many specialists (especially those related to trauma) may be capable of undertaking this task. This course has, then, the main goal of contributing to enhance knowledge and skills of medical doctors and dentists who dedicate or that may dedicate in the future to post-traumatic bodily injury assessment, aiming to contribute to good application of justice, in the best interest of victims (including aspects related to protection/safety, health/rehabilitation and evidence production for criminal investigation purposes, when necessary).
The assessment of post-traumatic personal injury, with the aim of guiding the appropriate reparation of this injury, whether judicial or extrajudicial, is an area that in Portugal is essentially the responsibility of forensic medicine, since it is an expert activity. In some respects, this speciality has become autonomous, not only because it often requires the contribution of various other medical specialities, but also because it is assumed that many specialists (especially those linked to trauma) may be qualified to carry out this activity. That's why in Portugal the Portuguese Medical Association created the competence in the assessment of bodily injury, with one of the mandatory criteria for admission to this competence being the completion of a course of the type proposed here.

It is hoped that students who successfully complete this course, in both its theoretical and practical aspects, will be able to provide quality, independent and impartial responses, always based on evidence, to requests made to them in this area, whether in court or out of court, with the main aim of contributing to the proper administration of justice and, in this sense, to guaranteeing the best interests of the victim, which in this case relate not only to compensation for the damage suffered but also, in particular, to their ability to reintegrate into their family, social and professional life and, therefore, also to their health.
