Stress Management and Burnout Prevention (Edition 1)
Using approaches from the field of psychology and psychological and mental health, the course aims to contribute to the promotion of individual well-being and the prevention of burnout in participants, at both a scientific and applied/practical level.
Through theoretical content and practical tasks, this course aims to introduce students to the biological basis of stress/burnout and its symptoms, as well as the relationship between stress/burnout, coping, resilience, anxiety and depression. It also aims to identify situations that induce chronic stress at work and exemplify the application of strategies for managing stress, stress at work, burnout and work-family conflict.
Adults over the age of 23, with a 12th grade education and working professionally. Preferably health professionals (e.g. nurses or administrators in the NHS or private health units) and rescue professionals (e.g. emergency medical technicians, firefighters, police officers, civil protection technicians), but also any professional from another area who needs to know stress management strategies and is interested in preventing burnout.
At the end of the training you should be able to:
- Know the bio-psycho-physiological mechanisms of stress and identify symptoms of stress;
- Know the causes and consequences of stress and the relationship between stress, work-related stress, burnout, coping, resilience, anxiety and depression;
- Identify symptoms of stress at work and burnout and anticipate situations that induce chronic stress at work in order to avoid burnout;
- Know and apply strategies for managing stress, stress at work, burnout and work-family conflict.
Theoretical-expository methodologies will be used for points 1 and 2 of the program using PowerPoints, accompanied by reading and critical reflection on texts and individual participation in the weekly debates taking place in the Moodle Forum.
For points 3 and 4, individual and group practical tasks will be carried out: demonstration/training in filling out/quoting instruments; practical exercises in relaxation and reprogramming of the autonomic nervous system (through breathing exercises; meditative exercises; stretching/contraction exercises) and cognitive-behavioral exercises in stress management strategies.
Self-study includes and is supported by the reading of texts on the content taught, with participation in the Forum debate and the preparation of an integrative critical reflection.

Specific admission requirements
Candidates must be adults over 23 years old, living in Portugal, with a 12th grade education and working professionally.
Selection and ranking criteria
Submission of a CV, documents proving qualifications and professional experience, as well as a letter of motivation for attending the training. The ranking will be based on the following formula:
- 6 points - Area of work (6 points in professions considered to be on the front line in the fight against the pandemic, such as health professionals or first aid workers; 5 points in other professions considered stressful by scientific research; 4 points in professions changed due to the pandemic, such as deliveries, telephone answering services; 3 points in other professions).
- 4 points - Years of professional experience in the field (4 points for more than 10 years; 3 points for 3 to 10 years; 2 points for 1 to 2 years; 1 point for less than 1 year).
- 4 points - Motivation letter explaining the importance of attending the course (4 points for excellent; 3 points for very good, 2 points for adequate; 1 point for weak).
- 3 points - Scientific activity (3 points for an important role in participating in scientific meetings or authorship; 2 points for a moderate role; 1 point for passive participation/assistance).
- 3 points - Other relevant elements (3 points for very relevant; 2 points for moderately relevant; 1 point for not very relevant).
