The Difficult Airway Approach (DAA) course aims to provide trainees with the necessary tools to identify and manage both predictable and unpredictable DAA situations. The training is designed to enable healthcare professionals to develop essential skills in the assessment, planning and execution of complex airway management procedures. Throughout the course, best practices and innovative techniques will be covered, promoting the development of technical and non-technical competences, with a focus on patient safety.

The Continuous Training Unit aims to develop technical and non-technical skills in dealing with the difficult airway. The training aims to assess the airway using ultrasound, anticipate and plan for difficult airway situations, acquire skills in the use of different devices, anaesthesia of the airway for intubation of the awake patient, fibroscopy and invasive techniques. The acquisition of skills in advanced extubation techniques is also recommended.

Doctors in hospital units who need training in the airway approach.

Nurses in hospital units who need training in the airway approach.

At the end of the training, trainees should be able to:

Recognise a potentially difficult airway and draw up an action plan involving the whole team.
Use ultrasound to assess the airway.
Demonstrate competence in the use of different devices and recognise their role in the difficult airway algorithm.
Demonstrate competence in drawing up an airway approach plan with the patient awake.
Demonstrate competence in performing invasive airway techniques.
Demonstrate competence in advanced extubation techniques.

The teaching/learning methodology consists of theoretical-practical sessions, divided into discussions of theoretical concepts, their clinical application and the training of technical skills through simulated situations/scenarios.

Trainees will be assessed on 45 multiple-choice questions and must answer more than 60 per cent of them correctly. The grade will be set at 20 marks.
