Unidades de Investigação - Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies

CETAPS is a research unit that unites 11 Portuguese institutions of higher education, promoting research and activities national and international reach.

The Unit’s dominant disciplinary domain is in the field of English Studies, as understood and practised internationally, but this focus on the Anglophone world is sharpened and inflected by an operative awareness of the Portuguese cultural standpoint. This creates the conditions for a research rationale which is interlingual and intercultural, a relational characteristic that endows CETAPS with its uniqueness, both nationally and internationally. Key concepts such as identity, community, and intercultural communication shape its inquiry, drawing on approaches from Lit. & Cultural Studies, Utopian Studies, Intermediality, & Education.

Activities

  • CETAPS runs 8 databases and publishes 4 digital journals, two of which have been recently indexed by Scopus;
  • The Unit also manages its own Digital Laboratory, a platform for Digital Humanities that hosts unique projects and provides initial and advanced training and support to CETAPS members, collaborators and students;
  • CETAPS offers scholarships and training programmes to young researchers and benefits from the dedication of the Junior Researchers in Anglo-American Studies Platform (JRAAS) to promote activities connected with the literature, culture and the arts of the anglophone world;
  • The Unit has also been involved in MA and PhD programmes, both national and international, and has consistently invested in a considerable number of high impact outreach activities.
