Doctoral Degree in Sociology

The PhD in Sociology provides in-depth, up-to-date and critical training in epistemological, theoretical, methodological and technical terms. It is a space for sociological teaching and research at doctoral level, characterised by innovation and the creation of conditions for examining emerging themes and constructing new theoretical challenges.

Curricular structure

The PhD lasts six curricular semesters, corresponding to 180 ECTS. The curricular structure includes, in the first semester, the following curricular units: Seminar on the Preparation of the Thesis I, Seminar on the Scientific Area of Specialisation I, Seminar on In-depth Sociological Theory, in the second semester, Seminar on the Preparation of the Thesis II, Seminar on the Scientific Area of Specialisation II and Seminar on In-depth Sociological Methodology. The remaining semesters will be taken up with the preparation of the Thesis.

The PhD programme articulates its activities with the research dynamics of the Institute of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto.
