Doctoral Degree in Communication and Information Sciences

The PhD in Communication and Information Sciences is taught by lecturers from the Department of Communication and Information Sciences, most of whom are researchers from CITCEM (Transdisciplinary Research Centre ‘Culture, Space and Memory’), an R&D unit funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. This Doctoral Programme is a strategic instrument for articulating with CITCEM's Research Group on Information, Communication and Digital Culture.

Job Opportunities

The completion of this cycle of studies provides PhD graduates with the skills to work in contexts linked to the Communication and Information Sciences (areas of social communication, organisational communication, communication consultancy, information management, information systems planning, etc.), in particular to perform functions such as: scientific research; teaching in higher education and positions in public and private organisations in the field of information and communication.

Curriculum Structure

The curricular plan of this cycle of studies aims to provide in-depth knowledge at an advanced postgraduate level, as well as the development of autonomous research skills, proposing an integrated approach to Communication and Information Sciences.

This integrated perspective is conveyed through a compulsory Curricular Unit (CU) in the 1st semester of the 1st year, which is complemented by further 3 optional CUs, which can be more focussed on Information Science or Communication Science issues, or that cut across these two sub-areas.
