Research Units - Institute of Sociology

The IS-UP was founded in 1989 with the aim of promoting research in this specific area of knowledge, also drawing on the heritage of other social sciences.

The Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS-UP) has a large team of researchers divided into two research groups: Social Recompositions, Culture and Territory and Labour, Family and Social Policies. The Social Recompositions, Culture and Territory Group structures its activities around the issues of Social Recompositions and Territories and Artistic Creation, Cultural Practices and Policies; the Labour, Family and Social Policies Research Group, on the other hand, has its activities configured around research into the fields of Labour, Employment, Professions and Organisations and Family, Ageing and Gender.

Activities

  • The IS-UP promotes research in areas such as Epistemology, Sociology of Science, Research Methodologies and Techniques, Political Sociology and Institutions, Sociology of Work and Organisations, Sociology of the Territory, Sociology of Cultures, Identities and Lifestyles, etc;
  • The Unit is dedicated to supporting the work of its integrated members and doctoral scholarship holders, through the technical and scientific means it has accumulated, and through the exercise of thematic discussion circles, guided by specific problems;
  • The IS-UP provides various services to the outside world at different territorial levels (local, regional, national, global), such as diagnosis and evaluation/monitoring of policies, institutions, practices and processes of social change;
  • The Unit operates in close collaboration with the activities carried out by FLUP's Sociology Department.
