Research Units - Magarida Losa’s Institute for Comparative Literature

The ILCML was formally created in 1985, but only began regular research activity in 1999, thanks to the commitment of Margarida Losa (1945-1999).

Seeking to combine scientific excellence with social relevance, the ILCML is dedicated to the study of issues involving Literature in its different expressions and intercultural, inter-artistic and inter-discursive relations.

Anchored in the field of Comparative Literature, its research is carried out in the fields of Cultural and Post-Colonial Studies, Interart Studies, Feminist and Queer Studies, Utopian Studies and Ecocriticism, in dialogue with other scientific areas. In this context, the team is organised around three internal groups - InterTransculturalities, Intermedialities and Intersexualities - with specific research approaches, but articulated and complementary to each other.

Activities

  • The ILCML is responsible for the publication of 3 electronic journals , 2 digital book collections and 4 printed book collections, in an open access format.
  • The Unit also participates in various international projects and regularly organises seminars, international colloquia, multidisciplinary events and university outreach activities.
  • The ILCML also promotes cultural and scientific exchange with national and international institutions and with other research centres in the field of comparative studies or other areas of knowledge.
  • The ILCML's team of researchers collaborates in different cycles of studies and advanced academic courses at FLUP, and also maintains collaboration protocols with various local and national cultural institutions.
