Department of Germanic Studies

The Department of German Studies (DEG) is one of the largest departments of its kind in Portugal. Its teaching staff (full, associate and assistant professors, assistants and lecturers) teach around 50 courses to more than 1,000 students throughout the three cycles of study.

DEG researchers belong to the CETAPS, CITCEM and CLUP research units and carry out research in the areas of intercultural communication, German-speaking culture and literature (from the medieval, modern and contemporary periods), linguistics and translation, as well as German teaching. The Department has institutional exchanges with around 30 universities in German-speaking countries and participates in various international research and teaching networks.
