Objectives

Objectives

This study cycle aims to ensure that students obtain:

+ Advanced knowledge involving, in particular, applied scientific and technological domains of Civil Engineering. It is intended to ensure a complementary training to the Degree in Civil Engineering in the areas of Structures and Geotechnics, Construction, Territory Planning and Transport and Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment, including advanced knowledge in relevant aspects.

+ Ability to perform all Civil Engineering Acts, with the graduates of this CE able to be admitted by the Order of Engineers with E2 Qualification Degree.

+ Skills that enable to conceive, design and manage Civil Engineering systems, structures and works, with critical
thinking in decision making; communication skills and teamwork, and a vocation for lifelong learning.

Specialisations and Career Paths

Specialisations and Career Paths

Structures and Geotechnics

Estruturas

The specialisation in Structures and Geotechnics provides in-depth training in the fields of design, analysis and construction of civil engineering structures and infrastructures, based on a rational combination of structural materials and soils in new or existing sustainable constructions. The specialisation goes into depth on subjects from the Bachelor’s Degree, such as strength of materials, theory of structures, soil mechanics and structural concrete, bases of structural engineering and geotechnical engineering. Graduates are particularly suited to the design of structures and geotechnical works. They also have the appropriate basic training to be part of design and construction teams in major public works.

Buildings

Construções

With the specialisation in Buildings we offer training in the areas of physics and technology of construction and the management of the construction process throughout the life cycle of buildings. It guarantees future Civil Engineering professionals technical and scientific training in the following project and construction areas: Building Physics – thermal, energy and acoustic performance, hygrothermal, ventilation, fire safety, pathology; Constructions Technology – rehabilitation, components and construction systems, building installations; Construction Management – coordination and management methodologies, safety in construction, building maintenance, technologies and information systems in construction, sustainability.

Spatial Planning and Transports

Planeamento

With the specialisation in Spatial Planning and Transports you get relevant skills in strategic planning, land management and transport infrastructure design and management from an international perspective and focused on the critical issues that society will face in the coming decades. The main objectives of the specialization are: i) to understand the factors that lead to variations in urban and regional growth and development; ii) to design and implement efficient and effective solutions for the management of resources in land use planning and transport infrastructures; iii) to define sustainable land use and transport development policies, taking into account environmental challenges, evolving cultural identities, technological innovation and complex community dynamics.

Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment

Hidraulica

The specialisation in Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment provides in-depth training in the fields of analysis, conception, design and construction of maritime and port structures (quay walls and breakwaters), port facilities (terminals), coastal defence works (groynes), hydraulic exploitation (Mini hydroelectric power plants and dams), water supply systems (networks, reservoirs), pollution control systems and exploitation of water resources, rainwater and wastewater.

I chose this study programme due to my interest in this area and because FEUP it’s a very well-rated college at European level for its excellence in teaching. Another reason that made me choose this school was the great academic environment I witnessed when I attended events at FEUP, such as the exhibitions for students or the Junior University. At the moment, my opinion about the academic and course environment remains. I feel that within the excellent infrastructure of this college we are a big family where we help each other and where we feel at home.

In terms of the quality of teaching, I can say that teachers are excellent and very demanding, so we leave each year with greater capacity to learn about increasingly complex and challenging subjects. In addition, teachers have a great relationship with us, always available to help us, allowing us to learn naturally and develop critical thinking.

In this way, FEUP provides a great perspective for the future because I know that we all finish college with a high level of education complemented by the coexistence with companies in job fairs that give us the notion that many institutions seek feup students for their skills and work ability. In relation to skills, many of them are achieved through extracurricular activities such as the students associations and the various departments. In my case, at IACES, I feel that I have gained the capacity to work as a team, to help and to solve problems that I might not have acquired if I was not part of this association.

In a sense, FEUP creates good professionals and above all good people where the feeling of belonging to a community prevails, so I advise this institution to all students who want to study engineering.

Partnerships with companies

More than a third of the end-of-course dissertations are carried out in a business environment, which is one of the great advantages of this training. The companies welcome students for a period to develop a topic with scientific quality assurance that will give rise to a Dissertation for obtaining a Master’s degree.
