Doctoral Degree in Transport Systems

Created within the context of the MIT Portugal Program, the Doctoral Programme in Transport Systems (PDST) is a joint programme between FEUP and the Universities of Lisbon and Coimbra. It is strongly interdisciplinary in nature, integrating topics in transport, mobility, and logistics. Based on various spatial levels and different modes of transport, particular emphasis is placed on policies and system planning, new mobility services, and social and environmental issues. Urban mobility and the city, as well as intermodality and long-distance transport, are key pillars of the PDST at FEUP.

Objectives

Objectives

The PDST covers all major transport issues, from transport policy and system planning to infrastructure design and maintenance, at different spatial scales (from international to local) and for different modes (air, rail, road, etc.). The estimated duration of the programme is 3 to 5 years.

During the first year, students receive advanced training in fundamental topics related to transport systems while preparing a dissertation project. During the remaining time, they develop their doctoral thesis in line with the dissertation project, which is presented and publicly discussed.

On completion of the PDST, students should have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for a university career in transport, including teaching and research, or for a professional career at a managerial level in both the public and private sectors.
