The Doctoral Programme in Occupational Safety and Health (DemSSO) is a third-cycle course that is highly multidisciplinary, resulting from collaboration with thirteen of the fourteen faculties of the University of Porto. Students therefore have a wide range of topics and areas in which to develop their doctoral projects.

Objectives

Objectives

The main objectives of the DemSSO are

  • To train senior professionals with the necessary leadership skills to develop, coordinate and manage occupational risk prevention and protection activities in different sectors of economic activity;
  • To develop leadership skills in scientific research in occupational safety and health;
  • To develop the ability to observe and critically analyse OSH problems in a sustainable manner, taking into account cultural, social, economic and political contexts;
  • Develop the ability to identify, assess and formulate OSH issues;
  • Develop the ability to intervene to achieve effective cultural, social, economic and political change;
  • Acquire advanced knowledge in the operationalisation of different research paradigms, with a critical and reflective approach to available information;
  • Develop the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

Career opportunities

The DemSSO is recognised by the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), which awards its doctoral graduates the professional title of Senior Occupational Safety Technician, Level VIII. The doctoral degree is a prerequisite for entry and progression in academic careers in higher education, as well as for the differentiation of roles at company level. It also qualifies its holders to carry out scientific research in the field of knowledge and expertise related to the degree and to promote and disseminate activities of high scientific and technical demand.
