First Degree in Civil Engineering

The aim of the Civil Engineering degree is to produce graduates with a sound basic knowledge of civil engineering, enabling them to use up-to-date and appropriate analytical methods, materials, equipment and processes, with due regard for ethics, the environment and the best interests of the community. This training should enable them to continue in the 2nd cycle of civil engineering.

The degree provides a solid knowledge of the basic sciences, namely mathematics, physics, programming and technical drawing, and a comprehensive knowledge of the main scientific and technical areas of civil engineering, with a detailed application of the initial training subjects, covering the areas of structures, materials, geotechnics, construction, hydraulics, roads, town and country planning, environment and transport.

Learning objectives

This cycle of study aims to ensure that students acquire:

  • advanced knowledge in the fundamental scientific and technological areas of civil engineering. The basic sciences include knowledge applicable to the subsequent technical areas, and in these technical areas the aim is to ensure basic training in the strength of materials and structures, hydraulics and the environment, physics and technology of structures and materials, soil mechanics, land use and transport, including advanced knowledge in relevant aspects;
  • the ability to access advanced training within the scope of a Master's degree in civil engineering;
  • skills that enable them to apply processes for analysing civil engineering problems, to carry out projects of low complexity, with critical thinking in decision-making, communication and teamwork skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
