The characteristics pointed out for the new educational models in engineering indicate the need for student-centred teaching, the promotion of technology-driven entrepreneurship and competency-based learning and multidisciplinary programmes. These trends in engineering education benefit from strong and visionary academic leadership, a culture of pedagogical innovation on the part of the teaching staff and new tools to support vocational/educational exploration and the assessment of learning.
Since 2021, new curricular components have been introduced and new teaching methodologies adopted, valuing students' academic and extracurricular experiences, in line with the best science and engineering schools in Europe. The new teaching model also responds to the disintegration of the integrated cycles, determined by Decree-Law no. 65/2018 of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
Pedagogical Innovation
The Pedagogical Innovation Office (GIP), formerly the Teaching and Learning Laboratory, was created in 2008 in partnership with the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPCEUP), as part of the Management Support Unit of the FEUP. Its mission is the continuous improvement of the teaching/learning processes in the courses, covering the three cycles of studies and FEUP's continuous training, with the aim of promoting the academic potential of students in its various aspects, based on a culture of teaching excellence.
