Services - Library and Information Services

The Documentation and Information Services (SDI) operate in the areas of management, dissemination, and preservation of scientific, technical, pedagogical, and heritage-related documentation and information. Their mission is to support teaching and research and to preserve the memory and the cultural and technological heritage of FEUP.

Units

The Archive Unit operates in the areas of administrative information management and the documentary heritage of FEUP. Its responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and managing FEUP’s archive, standardising work processes and ensuring information control throughout its lifecycle;
  • Proposing and keeping updated a policy for managing administrative documentation, both in traditional and electronic formats, establishing its creation, processing, archiving, evaluation, and preservation, in line with document retention period regulations;
  • Ensuring the representation of administrative documentation, facilitating its search, location, and access while integrating the various facets of the document concept;
  • Promoting the dissemination of the administrative documentation management policy and supporting FEUP’s organisational units in defining best practices for its implementation, overseeing document transfers, and ensuring the long-term security of permanently preserved information;
  • Overseeing heritage conservation by managing the Library’s reserved collection, the historical archive, and artefacts and equipment identified as FEUP’s museum heritage.

The Library Unit operates in the areas of selection, processing, and access to scientific, technical, and pedagogical documentary information, as well as in the management of user services. Its responsibilities include:

  • Managing the FEUP Library, including lending services, user support (reference services), reading spaces, and the collections housed in open-access areas;
  • Developing a collection management policy for scientific, technical, and pedagogical information that supports teaching, research, and development activities at FEUP, integrating traditional and electronic formats;
  • Managing the Library Catalogue, coordinating technical procedures among the various U.Porto libraries, and aligning policies and best practices in bibliographic description, indexing, and index management within a framework that encompasses the multifaceted concept of a document;
  • Processing information resources acquired or accessible to the community, regardless of format, to facilitate their search, location, and access;
  • Developing training activities and learning materials to enhance the community’s information literacy skills;
  • Providing interlibrary loan services and facilitating access to external documents.

The Museum Unit operates in the management of FEUP's museological heritage and in cultural initiatives and the exploration of documentary collections under the responsibility of the SDI. Its responsibilities include:

  • Managing the FEUP Museum, promoting, supporting, and collaborating in the safeguarding, study, and dissemination of FEUP’s museological heritage, focusing on past activities and contributing to the creation of future memory;
  • Proposing a heritage and museological policy for the cultural, scientific, and technological material and immaterial evidence that consolidates FEUP’s identity and memory, developing musealisation processes in close collaboration with departments;
  • Keeping the inventory of the heritage collection up to date, ensuring its standardised representation, facilitating access, and promoting electronic media as an enabler within an integrated perspective of the various facets of the document concept;
  • Implementing a documentation system for the collections, supported by standardised management procedures;
  • Organising and supporting initiatives for the utilisation, appreciation, and dissemination of the collections managed by the SDI, while promoting FEUP’s collective memory and identity.

The Electronic Services Unit operates in the production and management of digital collections, web services, specific SDI computer systems, and support for open access scientific and technical publication. Its responsibilities include:

  • Managing the operation of specific software applications and developing web services to support the various activities carried out by the SDI;
  • Managing FEUP’s digital repository, integrating internal documents resulting from teaching and research activities and external resources obtained through acquisition or capture, in coordination with U.Porto repositories and promoting the University's Open Science policies;
  • Contributing to the formulation of a policy and the implementation of best practices for digital preservation, ensuring the long-term availability of FEUP’s scientific, technical, administrative, and heritage documents and information;
  • Supporting and promoting the electronic publication of scientific and technical documentation in open access, resulting from teaching and research activities carried out at FEUP.
