Department - Mechanical Engineering

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec) is the education and training of professionals in the fields of Mechanical, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering at an international level; this mission is supported by globally recognised excellence in Research and Development and high-quality outreach practices, encompassing scientific, technical, ethical, and cultural dimensions.

DEMec comprises 95 teaching staff, 7 researchers, and 20 technical ETI staff.

DEMec is committed to training students at the levels of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd study cycles in Mechanical, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering to lead the design and development of sustainable and competitive products, processes, technologies, and systems on a global scale, meeting the needs of industry, education, and government. This training emphasises the principles of a solid scientific foundation, the fostering of creativity and innovation, environmental and economic considerations, as well as leadership and ethics.

DEMec promotes high-quality international research among its teaching staff and researchers as a foundation for generating knowledge that enhances the quality of education and strengthens the skills of its personnel; it encourages cooperation with leading universities and Research and Development (R&D) centres, as well as Innovation and Technology Transfer (ITT) organisations worldwide.

Through FEUP, DEMec contributes to the development of the national, European, and global economy, as well as to social cohesion, both through the students it trains and by making its knowledge available to society via participation in technology transfer projects.
