Origins

The origins of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto date back to 1762, with the creation of the Nautical Classroom, which became the Royal Academy of Marine and Commerce of the City of Porto in 1803.

In 1837, it was renamed the Polytechnic Academy of Porto, considered to be the first engineering school in the country. With the creation of the University of Porto in 1911, the engineering programmes at the University of Porto became an 'attached school' to the Faculty of Sciences, until the Technical Faculty was created with its own autonomy in 1915. In 1926, the school changed its name to the Faculty of Engineering, which it has retained to this day.

Legacy

With a legacy of 186 years, FEUP has played a fundamental institutional role in the economic development of the city and the country, both for the continuing excellence of its educational service, training engineers for the world, and for the scientific and technological advances it has contributed to industrial progress and people's quality of life.
