Projects - MIENAT

Methodology of Interpretation of European Nature Heritage in Tourism (MIENAT) is the name of the research project in the field of nature tourism that FEP integrates.

MIENAT Project

This is a research project funded by the Erasmus + Strategic Partnerships for higher education programme, which is being implemented in eight partner schools, which represent different European regions and countries with diverse natural heritage, namely Germany, Austria, Spain, Ireland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Romania and Portugal.

In the case of FEP the project is being led by Professors Pedro Quelhas Brito and Raquel Meneses and the sub-theme under analysis is the agricultural landscape, vineyards, wine routes and interpretation through experience.

MIENAT Project

In this video, the focus is on the Azores, the only archipelago in the world certified as a sustainable destination. Several public and private institutions work together to provide an experience rich in entertainment, interpretation and education without being invasive. The architecture of the interpretation centres and the effort to minimise human intervention are proof of their commitment. The video features testimonies from people involved in science centres, Montaneros and private diving companies that align themselves with this sustainable tourism policy.

In this podcast, two guides who lead tours of Algar do Carvão were interviewed. This is a unique and breathtaking natural wonder located in the Azores. As one of only two accessible extinct volcano craters in the world, Algar do Carvão is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.

This presentation focuses on the case of the Azores - an extraordinary archipelago that holds the distinction of being the only certified sustainable destination in the world. The Azores achieved this goal through collaborative efforts between public and private institutions. Together, they create an enriching experience that perfectly combines entertainment, interpretation and education, while maintaining a delicate balance with the environment.

The Azores' commitment to sustainability goes beyond mere tourism. By integrating videos and photographs showing the archipelago and its various interpretation centres, this presentation exemplifies how responsible practices can improve both the visitor experience and the preservation of the environment.

INTERPRETING EUROPE'S NATURAL HERITAGE IN TOURISM

Interpretation is an educational activity that goes beyond mere factual communication. Its aim is to reveal meanings and relationships through original objects, first-hand experiences and illustrative media.

In today's demanding tourism landscape, where environmental conservation is crucial, nature interpretation plays a vital role. By engaging travellers with the natural environment, we can promote their understanding and appreciation of nature while supporting conservation efforts.

As part of the MIENAT project, two books have been published, which serve as manuals for understanding and practising nature tourism interpretation, delving into some theoretical and practical aspects, with an emphasis on the detailed presentation of nine case studies from various European countries.
