Research and Development Units - Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice (CIJ)

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice (CIJ) is a Research and Development Unit based at FDUP.

History and Activities

CIJ started its training process in 1998 and begins its scientific activity in 1999, with the recognition and funding of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Since then, CIJ has participated in national and international projects, in partnership with Portuguese and foreign universities and organisations, and has provided services to the national and international community of significant relevance and impact.

Concurrently, CIJ, through its researchers, has been providing continuous collaboration to the FDUP, promoting and actively participating in post-graduate and Master’s Degrees courses on several Law subjects.

Additionally, since its foundation, this Research Unit has hosted dozens of visiting researchers from various foreign institutions.

Research Lines

CJS branches its research into two lines:

  1. Law, Corporate & Marketplace, which includes studies on Labour Law, Corporate Law, Social Rights and Consumer Rights, Civil and Professional Liability and on Tax Law;
  2. Law, Person & Power, which includes studies on the emergence of new rights or new objects for Law, studies on public policies and regulation, religious freedom, Europe in the international and national context, Administrative Law and on family property and succession relations.

Its research activity also focuses on the supervision of research, Master's, PhD and Post-Doctoral projects, disseminating the results, nationally and internationally, through the organisation and participation in conferences.

Currently, CIJ is composed of a team of 55 researchers, coordinated by Professor Graça Enes (Coordinator), Professor Anabela Costa Leão and Professor Sandra Oliveira e Silva (Co-Coordinators).

Electronic Law Review (RED)

Finally, it is important to mention the Electronic Law Review (RED), a FDUP/CIJ journal, which is published every four months and already has 29 volumes.
