Doctoral Degree in Agrarian Sciences
FCUP's Doctoral Programme in Agrarian Sciences (PDCA) offers advanced and excellent training in various scientific fields, such as agronomy, animal production, forestry and food science and technology and biotechnology. Students have the opportunity to conduct targeted research to solve scientific and technological problems by developing effective solutions for the conservation of natural resources and the increase of food production and quality, as well as farm competitiveness.
Job Opportunities
Agrarian sciences is an increasingly interdisciplinary field, so at the PDCA students can carry out research aimed at preparing a thesis in different areas, such as: plant biology, physiology and crop improvement; phytotechnology, crop protection; physiology and post-harvest technology; genetic, environmental and agronomical parameters; mechanisation and precision agriculture; farm environmental impact; biodiversity and agri-environmental systems; management of conventional and alternative production systems for the quality of food and industrial products according to their intended use. Former students who have completed this doctoral programme go on to careers in national or international academia and in public or private research institutions, as well as in private companies/start-ups and public institutions in agrarian sciences and related fields.

I started the doctoral programme in Agrarian Sciences to complement my experience as an oenologist. The biggest challenge was relating data from plant physiology, climatology, chemistry, and sensory analysis, while simultaneously seeking new knowledge and creating value. The course enabled me to develop personally, so I can approach my craft from a unique and high-impact perspective.

After completing my master's degree, I set out to develop advanced skills in a multidisciplinary area that would allow me to specialise in agronomy, plant protection, agri-food technology, and biotechnology. Thanks to its strong Research and Development component, the Doctoral Programme in Agrarian Sciences opened doors for me to carry out innovative scientific research in various top laboratories, while also enabling me to start a career as a higher education professor. I am confident that my professional success will continue to grow as a result of the pedagogical, critical, and analytical skills acquired during the Doctoral Programme.
