Learn moreBioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science and statistics to analyse and interpret biological and biomedical data.
Bioinformatics plays a crucial role in modern biology and biomedical research, enabling the analysis, interpretation and management of large-scale biological data, facilitating advances in genomics, proteomics, drug discovery, personalised medicine and the understanding of complex biological systems.
Bioinformatics has multiple applications in several fundamental fields, including:
- Genomics, in analysing and interpreting DNA sequences, genome assembly, gene annotation and comparative genomics.
- Proteomics, analysing the sequences, structures and interactions of proteins. Predicting protein function, interaction networks and identifying drug targets.
- Transcriptomics, analysing gene expression data to study gene regulation.
- Metagenomics, in the study of microbial communities and their genetic composition in environmental samples, contributing to the understanding of host-microbe interactions.
- Structural biology, in the development of modelling to analyse and predict protein structures.
- Drug discovery and development.
- Evolutionary biology, by studying evolutionary relationships or analysing genetic variations within and between species.
- Personalised medicine, through the development of biomarkers and risk models for diagnosis and patient prognosis.
- Research and academic institutions.
- Government agencies and regulatory bodies.
- Bioinformatics companies and health technology start-ups.
- Food and agriculture companies.
- Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
- Data science and software development companies.
- Clinical and healthcare environments, including public health institutes, diagnostic centres or hospitals.
- Furthermore, given the interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics, bioinformaticians are able to collaborate with professionals from various fields, which can lead to very diverse professional opportunities and careers.
