Mobility - Study Abroad

FCUP students have the opportunity to enrich their academic career with a mobility experience in another country. The advantages are many, but the main one is a new door to the future.

Students to study and do internships outside FCUP

Mobility OUTgoing | Studies

  • Be enrolled in an official Higher Education course,
  • Not have completed 12 months of mobility,
  • Be enrolled at least in the 2nd year of university (studies), and comply with the conditions of the agreement signed between the partner universities,
  • Have their tuition payments up to date.

Applications are announced on the FCUP website and via the institutional e-mail address.

After learning that they have been selected, students must formalise their application. To do so, they must follow the procedures below.

  • Complete the application form and submit the following documents:
    • Bank Identification Number (IBAN)
    • Citizen Card (CC) and / or passport
    • Tax Identification Number (NIF)
    • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Before departure

The student should start gathering all the necessary documentation for the mobility as soon as he or she is aware of the acceptance by the Host University;

Thus, among the main documents that the student will have to deal with are:

  • Travel - the student should search online and/or in travel agencies in order to find the best option and the best price;
  • Temporary accommodation - if permanent accommodation is not guaranteed, or if the host university does not guarantee or provide accommodation for the duration of the study period - the student will have to look for a place to live on arrival; we recommend that the student secure accommodation in a Hotel / Pousada / Hostel for the first few days, until permanent accommodation is found;
  • European Health Insurance Card / Private Insurance - in countries where the EHIC is not valid or if the student wishes to secure private medical assistance in case of need, they should take out private health insurance. For some destinations/countries outside the European Union, this insurance is compulsory.

It is the student's sole responsibility to register at FCUP and pay the relevant fees/insurance. In order to do this, they should contact FCUP's Academic Services before departure to make sure that everything is in order.

During your stay
  • Registration at the host institution
    You should go to the Mobility Office at the Host Institution or to the person responsible for mobility in order to register and find out about all the necessary procedures;
  • Filling in / Uploading the Statement Period of Studies
    The "Statement Period of Studies" certifies the date of arrival/departure at the Host Institution. It should be filled in, signed and uploaded to the SIGARRA platform; and you should keep the original document for a new signature on your return to FCUP.
  • Verification of the Original Study Plan
    With the person responsible for Mobility at the Partner University, you should check the compatibility of the curricular units previously agreed in your Original Study Plan.
    If changes are necessary, you should send an e-mail to [email protected], informing them of the incompatibility and providing the following information: Reason for incompatibility; Code, name and credits of the course proposed to be cancelled; Code, name and credits of the course proposed to be added;
  • Formalization of Changes to the Initial Study Contract (if applicable)
    Once the changes have been accepted by those responsible for the Mobility Programme at FCUP, you will receive the documents for formalizing these changes by e-mail.
    You must sign them and collect the signature and stamp of the Host University. You must then return them via e-mail to [email protected].

  • Communicate the date of return to Portugal at the host institution (to the person responsible for the mobility);
  • Certificate of Grades/Transcript of Records - it is compulsory to bring the "Certificate of Grades/Transcript of Records" stamped and signed by the person responsible at the Host University. The certificate must include: the name of the subjects you have enrolled in, the credits associated with each one and the respective local classification; it is the student's responsibility to ensure that this original document arrives at FCUP in good time;
  • Fill in the Statement Period of Studies - original document, completed, signed and stamped by the Host University;
  • Comply with all the procedures requested by SRI-REIT and duly transmitted by that Service, with a view to completing the Mobility.

  • Erasmus+ Traineeships: For students enrolled and recently graduated from higher education institutions in the Program countries at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level.
  • Internships under Cooperation Agreements: Agreements established with multiple institutions around the world (with conditions identical to those of Erasmus+, with the exception of the possibility of funding for the internship).
  • Internships for Students: It is also possible to attend an internship abroad, if the internship/project/dissertation curricular unit is part of the study plan.
  • Candidates are responsible for contacting the institution/entity for the internship;
  • Obtain acceptance from the host organization, which must confirm its interest in receiving the trainee;
  • Once the internship has been accepted by the host institution, the student's name, the name of the institution/entity, address, contact person and supervisor must be sent by email to [email protected] so that all the information can be entered into the SIGARRA system by the Internationalization Department;

Fill in the Application Form with the following mandatory documents

  • Travelling - the student must carry out an online search and / or contact travel agencies in order to find the best option and the best price for their trip.
  • Provisional Accommodation If permanent accommodation is not guaranteed yet, the host university does not guarantee or make accommodation available during the study period, it will have to be the student upont arrival to look for a place to stay. We recommend that students book accommodation in a Hotel / Hostel for the first few days, until they find permanent accommodation.
  • European Health Card /Private insurance - In countries where the EHIC is not valid or if the students wish to guarantee, in case of need, private medical assistance, they must take out private health insurance. For some destinations / countries outside the European Union insurance is mandatory.

It is the sole responsibility of the student to enroll in FCUP as well as pay the respective fees/insurance. For this purpose, the student must contact, before departure, the FCUP Academic Services to make sure that everything is taken care of.

During the stay
  1. Registration in the host institution
    Students should got to the office responsible for mobility at the host institution or to the person responsible for mobility in order to register and know all necessary procedures.
  2. Completion / Upload of the Statement Period of Studies 3. Verification of the Original Learning Agreement
    Students should check the compatibility of the curricular units previously agreed in their Original Learning Agreement with the mobility officer at the partner university If any changes are necessary, students should send an e-mail to [email protected] informing of the incompatibility and providing the following information: reason for the incompatibility; code, name and credits of the proposed subject to cancel; code, name and credits of the proposed subject to add.
  3. Formalizing changes to the initial learning agreement (if applicable)
    After the changes are accepted by the responsible parties for the Mobility Programme at FCUP, you will receive via email the documents for formalizing those changes. The student must sign them and have them signed and stamped by the Host University. The documents must then be returned by e-mail to [email protected]
Return to FCUP
  • Communicate the date of return: Students must inform the host institution (the mobility officer) the date of return to Portugal.
  • Grades Certificate / Transcript of Records – It is mandatory to bring the “Grades Certificate/Transcript of Records” stamped and signed by the person responsible at the Host University. The certificate must include the subjects in which the student enrolled, the number of credits for each subject, and the respective grade or classification. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that this original document is presented at FCUP as soon as possible.
  • Complete the Statement Period of Studies - original document, completed, signed, and stamped by the host University.
  • Comply with all procedures requested by SRI-REIT duly conveyed by that Service, in order to end the Mobility.
