The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto has its origins in the Academia Portuense de Belas Artes, created in the city on November 22, 1836. However, we can go back a little further and find in the Public Class of Debuxo and Drawing the reminiscences of an artistic education organized.
At Colégio dos Meninos Órfãos na Praça do Carmo
In November 1779, by Decree of Queen D. Maria I (1717-1816), the Public Debuxo and Drawing Class was established in the city of Porto, which was directly linked to the city's businessmen (Administrative Board of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro), since its main objective was to provide “an artistic education based on drawing and oriented towards its practical applications, within the scope of the manufactures that depended on it”.

In 1836, the Portuense Academy of Fine Arts (APBA) was created, which, by the statutory provisions, offered five courses: Historical Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Civil and Naval Architecture, and Historical Engraving. Classes began in July 1837, then distributed across two buildings – the extinct Convento de Santo António da Cidade, in S. Lázaro (the current building of the Municipal Public Library of Porto) and the building of the Colégio dos Meninos Orfãos (where it was also the Royal Academy of Navy and Commerce is located, and where the U.Porto Rectory building is currently located). It was only in 1874 that all classes were brought together in the S. Lázaro building.
At Casa de São Lázaro since 1937
In 1911, APBA gave way to the Escola de Belas Artes do Porto (EBAP), following a reform that reorganized the Escolas de Belas Artes de Lisboa and Porto. In 1933, the Decree-Law of October 9 determined that EBAP be installed in the building of the Porto Commerce Institute, Casa da Família Forbes – Palacete do Braguinha, where important names in Portuguese plastic arts, such as the painters Nadir Afonso, Júlio Resende and Júlio Pomar or the sculptor José Rodrigues. A legacy that continues to be honored today by the hands of new talents currently emerging in the areas of fine arts (Sculpture, Painting), drawing and illustration, or Communication Design.
