A Casa da Família Forbes

António Ribeiro Forbes (1791 – 1862), born in Fafe and emigrant to Brazil, bought land on Rua de S. Lázaro (currently Avenida Rodrigues de Freitas) in 1861 to build a house there. However, the project would only be implemented by his widow, D. Maria do Carmo (1816-1901) in 1873. The Forbes Family House was born, imposing and equipped with a grand garden.

But in 1875, José Teixeira da Silva Braga (1811-1890), also a native of Fafe and an emigrant to Brazil, acquired the building and gardens for 70 contos de reis, having lived there until his death. His heir, José Braga Junior (Vice-Consul of Brazil in Porto) gave life to the palace, promoting music concerts and building a new garden (according to designs by Belgian landscape architect Florent Claes), where several tropical species were planted that would later become constitute “a collection of the best in Europe”.

The Decree-Law determining the installation of the Escola de Belas Artes do Porto in the Palacete do Braguinha and attached land dates back to 1933. The changes began in 1937.

When Joaquim Lopes takes over the direction of the School in 1945, he will, together with Carlos Ramos, manage the School's expansion project, ensuring the “phased execution of all pavilions, but also its permanence in the city center”.
