Cinema de Bairro began its sessions in February 2016 at the Faculty of Fine Arts, under the fanciful aspiration of adding a cinema to Porto, inspired by those in the neighborhood, which for years entertained generations of spectators. And why not, go against the trend of closing cinemas, which has been devastating in recent decades in the city, creating a place of culture through cinema that welcomes anyone, opening the doors of Fine Arts to the outside world – to everyone. Afterward, “the grain will make the forest”, as the motto of that botanist who was a photographer said.
The project arose following the initiative of FBAUP students and teachers interested in cinema – in promoting cinema culture – implementing a growing relationship with the community – with students and especially with the neighboring population, who have attended sessions regularly and are interest, to our satisfaction. From the beginning, it has been a free event and open to the general public, starting by offering a weekly program (in partnership with Medeia Filmes), and later settling into a fortnightly exhibition format. In recent years, an informal open class format has been adopted, showing the film before the respective session.
