Projects - Programs/Projects

FADEUP promotes and hosts a wide range of community outreach programmes and projects.

FADEUP's activities are not limited to teaching and research, and outreach to the community is of great importance to the institution.

Sporting, artistic, social and cultural activities are particularly important in FADEUP's various programmes and projects, which are designed to meet the needs of the community and contribute to the development of the region and the country.

In collaboration with Porto City Council and local clubs, FADEUP's sports facilities are open from 7.30 pm for athletes from clubs without their own sports facilities to practise various sports.

Sport Club do Porto, the city's historic club with some Olympic gymnasts in its history, uses FADEUP's Rhythmic Gymnastics Pavilion to train its gymnasts.

Futebol Clube do Porto's youth basketball teams train daily at the FADEUP Multipurpose Pavilion, where some of the first-team players from Porto's most prominent club have played. Also, from Futebol Clube do Porto, some of the adapted sports disciplines use the FADEUP pavilions for training.

With hundreds of athletes, the football team of Sport Comércio e Salgueiros uses the outdoor sports facilities for their training sessions.

"Escola do Movimento" is the only athletics club currently in existence in the municipality of Porto. With no facilities, it carries out its activities on the premises of FADEUP, where the athletes who represent the club practise athletics.

Some of the club's coaches and athletes are FADEUP teachers and students.

Dozens of young people train at the Escola do Movimento daily, including some top athletes who have participated in European and world championships and the Paralympic Games.

"Mental Health in Motion" is a community outreach project run by FADEUP, with the support of IPDJ and CIAFEL, which promotes regular physical activity for people with severe mental illness. The classes are free and run by professionals specialised in Adapted Physical Activity.

The type of activities offered is diverse and includes sports (football, volleyball, athletics), functional training, fitness activities, weight training and outdoor sports. The physical activity sessions are offered thrice weekly and last 60 minutes. The programme runs throughout the school year.

The Psychiatry Units of the São João Hospital and the Porto Hospital Centre and ANARP - Associação Nova Aurora na Reabilitação e Reintegração Psicossocial are FADEUP's partners in this project.

A protocol established between FADEUP and the Northern Portuguese Association for Developmental Disorders and Autism North (APPDA) allows 20 autistic individuals to participate in a basic physical education programme, promoting physical activity among the participants, their socialisation, and improved quality of life.

The AEFADEUP Handball Academy is an innovative project that aims to promote handball among children and young people and become a training school for young handball coaches under the supervision of handball teachers from FADEUP.

Launched for the first time in 1997, the "Mais Ativos, Mais Vividos" programme aims to promote health and maintain a healthy lifestyle among the elderly population of the Porto Metropolitan Area. Among the aspects worked on during the classes monitored by FADEUP students - all of whom are specialised technicians attending the Exercise and Health option of the Sports Science Degree, the Master's Degree in Physical Activity, Exercise and Health or the PhD in Physical Activity and Health, under the supervision of teachers from FADEUP's Exercise and Health subject area - are regular sports practice in an informal, recreational and intergenerational environment.
