Call for Submissions

Aligning with the spirit that has inspired SIS-Symmetry since 1989, we are announcing the call for submissions for the 12th Symmetry: Art and Science Congress. As in the previous congresses, we aim for this to be a vehicle for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and practical experiences within the community of academics, scientists, researchers, artists, and students gathered around themes as interdisciplinary and prolific as symmetry, asymmetry, dissymmetry, and their many forms.

Our goal is to foster interdisciplinary discussions and interactions between theoretical and practical research on the concept of symmetry and understand how its pervasiveness connects multiple fields of knowledge such as anthropology, architecture, arts, chemistry, computer sciences, economics, engineering, history, information science, logic, mathematics, philosophy, physics, politics, the social studies, and others.

We invite academics, scientists, researchers, artists, and students to participate in this Call by submitting, between 11 July 2021 and 11 December | 31 December 2021 | 09 January 2022, an extended abstract describing an investigation or practical experiment on any interdisciplinary study of symmetry in the form of paper, poster, workshop, or artwork.

The extended abstracts will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee (through a double-blind review process), which will select several abstracts based on the originality of the topic proposed, rigor of research, and overall clarity of presentation. Accepted submissions will be included in the congress program and collected in a book that will be distributed during the conference.

SCOPE OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS

Throughout the six days of the Program, the 12th SIS-Symmetry Congress will include different sessions whose themes will be established according to the submissions that come to be accepted by the Scientific Committee. The following are suggested topics for the sessions that, from theoretical studies to practical applications on the concepts of symmetry, asymmetry, and dissymmetry, might be addressed by the authors in their submissions for papers, posters, artworks, or workshops. The following topics are not meant to be restrictive since the organization is receptive to contributions related to other studies on symmetry without the restriction of disciplinary division.

  • Symmetries in art and architecture
  • Symmetries in cognitive sciences
  • Symmetries in crystallography
  • Symmetries in education
  • Symmetries in ethnomathematics
  • Symmetries in geometry
  • Symmetries in information science
  • Symmetries in literature
  • Symmetries in mathematics
  • Symmetries in music
  • Symmetries in nature
  • Symmetries in origami
  • Symmetries in patterns, tilings and tessellations
  • Symmetries in polyhedra
  • Symmetries in proportions
  • Symmetries in semiotics
  • Symmetries in spatial structures
  • Symmetries in the social sciences
  • Symmetries with computational design

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL

In this webpage and the template provided below, authors will find the necessary information to submit a proposal. If any question remains, please write to this e-mail address (deactivated in 06.2024)

The following buttons link to: [1] the abstract’s template (*), [2] the EasyChair’s submission page, and [3] the e-mail address through which the corresponding author must send a short biographical note (150 words maximum).

Please note that authors of accepted abstracts must guarantee their participation in the congress. In abstracts with more than one author, it is required that at least one of the co-authors accomplishes his/her/their registration.
For each extended abstract selected for presentation, at least one author must pay a registration fee.

  • On 24 November 2021, the limit of pages mentioned in the template was changed to 6 pages (instead of 4) and the deadline for the Call for Submissions extended until 31 December 2021.
  • Minor adjustments in the 2nd paragraph of the template were introduced on 28 November 2021.
  • On 30 December 2021, the deadline was extended until 09 January 2022.
