Recent advances in the biological sciences hold tremendous promise to address and offer solutions to many societal problems. Genomics is at the heart of this revolution and at the same time is allowing biologists to understand nature at unprecedented levels of resolution. But the extraordinary power and sophistication of new technologies will face enormous challenges because we need the general public and the society to both understand and accept the still unimagined impact of the ongoing biological revolution. In this talk I will first briefly describe this revolution, then try to anticipate some of the major challenges lying ahead, and finally offer some possible solutions related to the public understanding of science.
