From the terroir to the glass
Terroir, viticulture, wine production, sensory evaluation, marketing and health
About this conference
The conference “Science & Wine – from terroir to glass” will address some of the most important topics related to vine and wine: terroir, viticulture, winemaking, sensory evaluation, marketing and health.
Being often analyzed separately, the conference will provide a joint discussion of those topics that adds not only scientific but also economic value. In this context, the conference will be an opportunity for academics, winemakers and industry associations to discuss some of the great issues surrounding wine production, marketing and consumption.
The conference “Science & Wine – from terroir to glass” will be the perfect occasion for cross-fertilization between scientists and students from different fields (enology, viticulture, chemistry, marketing and health) together with winemakers, winemakers and sectoral institutions.
Organization and support
This conference is part of the program of the Port Wine Day, an event organized by the Port and Douro Wines Institute (IVDP). This event celebrates the date of September 10, 1756, on which the Marquês de Pombal created the oldest demarcated and regulated region of the World: the Douro Demarcated Region. As an initiative that brings together speakers with different competencies and responsibilities, this conference is intended as an opportunity to promote the debate on science and wine between the academic community and economic agents.
In this way, the conference represents a contribution to the fulfillment of the Third Mission of the University of Porto which, in an active way, assumes itself as an important driver of economic, social, cultural and scientific development in the North of Portugal and in the country in general.

TESTIMONIALS
What people say
As an institution open to the community, the University could not be indifferent to the role that wine has in the city, North region and in country. Wine is a product that followed the economic, social and cultural evolution of the Portuguese society, being a central element of the identity matrix of the country. This conference is based precisely on the importance that the University of Porto attributes to wine and the scientific critical mass that the institution has gained in the field of winemaking.
The University of Porto proposed to the IVDP the inclusion, in the Port Wine Day 2017, of the conference “Science & Wine – from the terroir to the glass”.
This conference, will undoubtedly provide a moment of reflection and an opportunity to contact the recent scientific developments in themes involving wine, fully in keeping with the purposes that led to the creation of the Port Wine day.
