bioUVscreen – UV screens from microorganisms

Teresa Martins

Leader

Inspired by UV protective compounds from microbial sources, we propose to develop new active ingredients with enhanced UV-A protection that can be used in the formulation of sunscreens and/or be embedded in the lenses of sunglasses and other surfaces.

FlySafe – Decision support tool for flight emergency landing based on vital signs transmission

Vitor Minhoto

Leader

One of the greatest problems in the flight industry is the need of proceeding with an emergency landing when a passenger claims to not feeling good or when specific signs of illness are shown. This involves a great amount of money and time consuming procedures to the flight companies. In order to overcome these problems and to do more accurate diagnostics and better decisions we need a tool that reads the vital signs of the subject and where we can describe basic symptoms, then sends it to a Hospital where a doctor will analyse the data and send his official opinion about what is really happening.
Our main objective with this project is to design a model that takes into account the vital signs that we need to record, the technology needed to send data, what will be the destination of that data, who will evaluate it, and how will the decision be made.

Pharmasitic – Pharmaceutical compounds with anti-parasitic activity

Sara Freitas

Leader

Small molecules of natural origin represent an invaluable source of chemical diversity and unique novel structures that could be the solution for multi-drug resistance problems as well as their acquisition through a renewable source or alternatively by chemical synthesis. For that reason, exploring new natural metabolites is essential for the development of new anti-parasitic strategies.
The solution herein presented is a new anti-parasitic natural compound, hierridin C, with proved antiplasmodial activity and with potential to be used against other parasitic targets. Hierridin B, a natural alkyl-aromatic metabolite isolated from a marine cyanobacterial strain, had previously been reported as a potent antimalarial agent as well.

SOILIFE – A sustainable olive pomace processing intending a substrate production and the recovery of bioactive compounds

Maria Antónia Nunes

Leader

Project SOILIFE presents an eco-friendly procedure that converts olive pomace into a solid substrate. At the end of the process, a non-phytotoxic product is obtained, suitable to be used in agriculture as soil, agricultural additive or agricultural substrate, in particular as soil fertilizer for plant cultivation, soil substrates, or soilless culture additives. This process implies minimal energy cost (using low temperature) and water as solvent in extraction cycles. Besides eliminating olive pomace phytotoxicity, this procedure allows the simultaneous recovery of bioactive compounds with added-value for other industries as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic.

In one way, we developed and adapted a set of innovation methodological tools that aim to discover, promote and improve skills and competences, in order to identify new insights and translate them into commercially successful products and services. This way, our customized approach brings a multidisciplinary approach (arts, technology, craftwork, etc) together with user-centered design and co-creation.

A digital marketplace to connect the new creations with a large audience is the window to turn all invisible talent into a visible one and promote their own income from the sales of original work.

BioIDkits – Molecular kits for biological identifications

Filipe Pereira

Leader

Our kits use conventional molecular biology reagents to identify the organisms that provided biological material to a complex sample, where no morphological feature can be used. They are particularly useful for analysis of suboptimal DNA samples by targeting high copy number, conserved and short DNA regions. They also target different genomic regions simultaneously (multiplex capacity), with increases the robustness of the analysis. All analyses using our kits are done with conventional laboratory equipment. We have developed kits for identification of humans and domestic species (dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, sheep, goat, etc.), plants, genetically modified organisms (including the first transgenic animal approved for human consumption – the AquAdvantage salmon), etc.

SNACk for fish: Sporeformer’s Natural Antimicrobial Compounds as the key to control aquaculture diseases

Rafaela Santos

Leader

One of the most promising alternatives to antibiotics as health-promoting strategies is the use of probiotics as feed additives. Probiotics are “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. They are believed contribute for gut microbiota balance, improve host growth and immune system, compete with pathogens for adhesion sites/nutrients, and produce natural antimicrobial compounds (NAC). These NAC can be metabolites, peptides or proteins and might interfere with bacterial growth and communication.

Probiotic bacteria have been implicated in bioremediation and water quality improvement, and by decreasing the incidence of diseases, probiotics reduce the antibiotic residues in the environment, contributing to the sustainability of aquaculture.

The purpose of this project is to create a tool that is highly adaptable and is able to support the same work of an image specialist of any area. Initially our work will be focused in providing support for different areas:

– Automatic highlighting, tag and classification of regions that are present in images obtained by autonomous underwater vehicle (images from the sea floor).

– Automatic highlighting, tag and classification of regions of interest in mammograms and detection of malignancy in each of them.

– Automatic detection of common objects in images, for example differentiating photos of groups of persons from a single person or objects like cars.

This solution allows the reduction, or even elimination, of time spent by specialists selecting and describing images.
