How to Apply
The U.Porto 3MT® competition is organised in several phases, starting with the inscription and submission of videos by the candidates, passing through the attendance of a training session by the 20 selected candidates, and culminating in a final competition.
Phase 1
You have to provide personal and academic information, as well as details about your doctoral thesis, on the enrolment form. At the beginning of January, you will gain access to the U.Porto 3MT® Curriculum Unit (UC) on Moodle and tutorial videos will be available to guide you on how to record and upload a video to Panopto®.
- The video must be a maximum of 3 minutes. Submissions that go over this limit of time will not be accepted. The timer starts when the presentation begins.
- The video must be recorded in English.
- You may include one static slide. However, please note that transitions, animations, or any movement of the slide are not allowed. This slide is optional and should serve to illustrate your talk. It may be submitted along with the video.
- The location of the 3MT® PowerPoint slide in the recording should be on the top right corner or the right side, and can be shown continuously or cut to as many times as needed for a maximum duration of one minute.
- The video must be recorded from a single, static camera angle. Zooming in and out from this static position is acceptable.
- The 3 minute audio must be continuous with no cuts, edits, or breaks.
- No additional props are allowed, such as laser pointers, costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment, or animated backgrounds.
- No additional electronic media, including sound and video files, can be included in the video recording.
- Recommended video formats are MP4, WMV, and AVI.
Note that you can record your video using Panopto® or another software or device, and then upload it to Panopto®. Your video must be easily identifiable (saved in the correct location and labelled with your name). This validates the delivery of the video and your participation in the competition.
All students eligible to submit a video will have access to the Curricular Unit (UC) dedicated to the U.Porto 3MT® competition that will be created in Moodle. You can access it from your Sigarra personal page by selecting the ‘Moodle 24/25’ option on the righthand side. Alternatively, you can use the U.Porto federated authentication access (AAI) to go directly to Moodle.
To assist with this process, the UC in Moodle will include video tutorials on how to record your presentation and how to upload it to Panopto®. You might also find this U.Porto page useful for various tutorials on the Panopto®.
Phase 2
The candidates who have submitted the best 20 videos will have the opportunity to participate in the U.Porto 3MT® Science Communication training, which is scheduled for 11 of April 2025.
In this training the finalists will have the opportunity to improve their communication skills, that is to say, they will acquire or develop transferable skills including both verbal and nonverbal forms of communication, supporting the candidates to explain their research using language adapted to a non-specialist audience. These candidates will participate in the Final competition U.Porto 3MT®, where they will present their doctoral research project, and the jury will evaluate the presentations.
Final competition U.Porto 3MT®
The 20 finalists will participate in the Final competition U.Porto 3MT®, where they will deliver their presentations. A jury will evaluate each presentation based on specific criteria. At the end of the event, a winner will be announced, and an honourable mention will be awarded.
- Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
- Presentations are to be in spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps, or songs).
- Presentations are considered to have begun when a presenter begins his or her presentation by speaking.
- Presentations must be in English.
- The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the communication.
- No additional electronic media (e.g., sound and video files) are permitted.
- A single static PowerPoint slide is allowed (no slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any kind).
- No costumes, musical instruments, or laboratory equipment are allowed.
- The decision of the jury is final.
Evaluation Criteria
- The presentation provided clear motivation, background, and significance to the research question.

- The presentation clearly described the conclusions, outcomes, and impact of the research.
- The oration was delivered clearly, and the language was appropriate for a non-specialist audience.
- The PowerPoint slide was well-defined and enhanced the presentation.
- The presenter conveyed enthusiasm for their research and captured and maintained the audience’s attention.
