by division and differentiation is a speculative fiction, a document on daily life as an outsider. Presented as a video, this project is the result of a residency program crossing scientific and artistic research that reveals imaging reflections, detected gestures, and alienated thoughts.

An inner monologue sets the tone for travels among accounts, wanders, and memories, invoking the divergences and parallelisms between reality and imagination. There are twisty borders in the millimeters of tension of what is visible to the naked eye and what can only be seen through the machine, between what can be touched without danger and what’s endangered — in science and art. Surrounded by volumes of data that are phenomena for others, dances of precise injections and light beams, we have lost count of the time we have been here.

Carolina Grilo SantosArtistic Researcher

Carolina Grilo Santos (Aveiro, 1993) is a visual artist based in Porto, Portugal. Her artistic practice is also developed as a collaborator researcher at i2ADS, a co-founder of Paralaxe and as a member of the independent studio and artist-run space Campanice. Some of her recent exhibitions are "Como plantar um penedo" (CCVF, Guimarães), "Devenir Isla - Inéditos 2022" (Casa Encendida, Madrid) and "how to make a fossil in a single day" (Galeria Ocupa!, Porto).

Carolina has been exploring scientific concepts and languages from a speculative point of view, crossing artistic research and practice, geopoetry, astrophysics, geography, para‑scientific theories and personal memories. Creating her unique world where science, imagination, doubts and memories build segmented realities and truths. Carolina Grilo Santos has been working mainly on site‑specific projects where intruder objects appear to disrupt logic or temporary micro‑universes are created, lagged from reality.
